About Johnson Legacy, Inc…
Johnson Legacy Inc. is an arts focused 501 (c)(3) in Denver Colorado that aims to develop and support culturally expansive programming with an emphasis on music/vocal performance, poetry/literature, theater, fiber art, and dance. We believe that artists make cities and communities safer and more vibrant. We believe that supporting artists is not only about financial support for their art but also and perhaps most importantly, support for their mental and emotional well-being and personhood. We believe that art is restorative and necessary for community-building and kin-making. And we believe that art is most effective when it is an honest reflection of society so we acknowledge history, preserve heritage, and restore hope.
Christine and Byron Johnson
Brief History: Following the death of longtime educator Christine Johnson in 1998, a series of events were set up to honor her. The community’s response to our efforts was overwhelming. With the help of Reverend Gil Caldwell, then-pastor of Park Hill Methodist Church in Denver, we started Johnson Legacy to honor Christine AND Byron. Christine’s decades long commitment to underserved students in Denver Public Schools and Byron’s legacy as an All Star shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Leagues, inform the mission and the means. We affirm that art is provocation and education is invitation. And we affirm that everyone should have access to both.
